Introduction to College
What Interests Me?  What Can I Be?

Objective: To create an environment and dialogue that will help students to become more aware of themselves as future college applicants.  The activities in this class are intended to help students monitor their awareness of their own interests and the process that they will be involved in while applying to college and becoming a college student.

Part 1: Motivational writing My Life, My Plan

Who am I?  What do I like to do?  What do I want to be?

  1. Write a detailed description of your life for the next five - eight years.  What are your goals?  What steps will you take to achieve these goals?  What resources are available to you to help you accomplish these goals?  Who will you be when you have achieved your goals?
  2. Students will share their plans with the class.  Choose one student's interest and illustrate the many careers that can be linked to the area of interest.  The teacher should stress the fact that one interest and/or skill can lead to a variety of career paths.  For example, a person interested in art can be an artist, architect, art librarian, art therapist, art teacher, interior designer, etc.
  3. In preparation for the next class, ask students to formulate three - five questions regarding the college process, college life, and career goals about which they feel they need to know more.

Part 2: What I Like To Do?  Questionnaire

  1. Give students five - ten minutes to fill out questionnaire and once they have completed it, allow them to calculate the results.
  2. Students will share their results with the class.  In addition, ask students whether the results reflect the goal / career they mention in the previous discussion.
  3. Homework: How much do you know about your intended profession?  Identify / find a person who is very successful in your field.  In addition, students will find out three things about this person's career process.

Introduction to College
Campus Connections

Objective: To give students an opportunity to talk with "real" college students.  The previous class will have motivated students to assess their knowledge of college and potential careers.   Students also considered what the process of achieving their goals would be like and this session will allow them to ask questions to clarify anything that is unclear, as well as build their knowledge of college life and the application process.  Students will also gain first hand knowledge since the Baruch students recently entered college and are where they will be in a year or two.

Procedures

Procedure:

Activity 1

  1. Students will meet the college advisor

  2. Advisor will review Junior / Senior year plan with students

  3. Introduction to resources available to students in the college office

  4. Use resources to identify 3 colleges that offer their intended majors. Students will contact the colleges and request a brochure and application from the colleges they have selected( Reminder: we'll use the personal essay questions from your applications to write our personal essay).

Activity 2

  1. Whole group discussion: students will introduce the person they have researched and that facts they have discovered about this person's career and education. They will also inform the class of where they found the information.

  2. On board: write places where the information on the person was found to create a "resource board" for the class to use to find out more information about their person's career.

  3. Use the New York State Professions Licenses Requirements website to seek your interested career and find out what the requirements are for your interested subject. For example, CPA requirements.

  4. What should we find out next? Response should be motivated by students in keeping with the theme of the course "Self - reliance".

HW:

Read the article "Getting into College"-What you need to know now about the admissions process (U.S. News & World Report, August 30, 2004) and make a list of tips you have learned from the article. We'll share in class.

Questions for my visit to Baruch College

Before you visit any college, you should develop a list of questions to ask.  This will ensure that you get all of the information you need!  If you find it difficult to make up questions, visit the college's website...view information about the college's buildings, professors, majors, activities, etc. and you're sure to find things you wish you knew about!

Introduction to College
Resources at the College Office

Objective: To introduce students to the resources that are available to them at the high school.  Now that students have explored what they might like to study in college and which high school activities might enhance their college resumes, they should be educated about how to plan a college prep course curriculum.

  1. Bring the students to the College Office to meet the College Advisor.
  2. The Advisor will review a junior and senior year plan and the criteria that are required for different types of high school diplomas.  Students should complete a four-year course plan with the help of the advisor.
  3. Students will use the resources to identify three colleges that offer their intended majors.  Students will contact the colleges and request a brochure and application from the colleges they have selected.

Introduction to College
Career Role Models

Objective: To have students identify a person who has succeeded in a career in which the students might be interested.  Students will identify the education and career path of their selected individuals.

  1. Whole group discussion: students will introduce the person they have researched and the facts they have discovered about this person's career and education.  They will also inform the class of where they found the information.  How did they succeed?  How can we succeed?
  2. On the board, write places where the information on the person was found to create a "resource board" for the class to use to find out more information about their person's career.
  3. What should we find out next?  Response should be motivated by students in keeping with the theme of the course "self - reliance."

Introduction to College
Admissions Officer for a Day

*Recommended to be a two-day activity

Objective: To give students a holistic perspective of the college application.  Many students view grades and standardized test scores as the make-it-or-break it components of the college application.  However, most colleges look at a student as a whole package and value his/her extracurricular interests and contributions to the community.

  1. Break students into groups of at least three, and give each group the following three college applications and Admission Officer for a Day handout.
  2. Tell students that for the next two classes, they will be acting as a college admissions committee, and making decisions on whom to admit to their college.
  3. Ask students, as a group, to decide one candidate to admit, one to reject, and one to waitlist.  Each group should be able to explain/argue for the decision they make.
  4. Each group should make arguments for the candidates and decision they have made and the whole class should come to a consensus (or as close as possible) on who to admit, reject and waitlist.
